High heels have been around for a very long time. Though they are not the epitome of sophistication and womanly sexiness, they have been serving similar purposed for men and for women for a long time. High heeled shoes are depicted in ancient Egyptian art in murals but the first history of heels goes back even further. The Egyptian depictions took place around 4000 BC and showed images of people wearing high heels in murals on the walls of ancient tombs and temples. The shoes depicted were flexible pieces of leather held on the foot with leather lacings. The next incarnation was a sort of platform sandal in 200 BC. These platform sandals were called kothorni. They had high wood soles and were used predominantly by tragic Roman actors. The kothorni were utilized mostly to give the advantage of height. Next, in 1000 CE the tradition came into play that the father of the bride in a Saxon wedding would give one of the bride’s shoes to the groom in order to symbolize the passing of authority from one man to another. Shoes were not always simply for the purpose off beauty nor were they always simply functional. In 1154 King Henry II of England began to wear a shoe with narrow and pointed toes. This started a trend among the courtiers even though it was rumored that Henry wore these shoes in order to hide a deformation of his toes. In the 12th century CE, knights began to wear shoes with downward curving toes in order to keep their feet in the stirrups of their horses. Shoe toes were a big point of contention. It came to a point in the early thirteenth century where the length and pointed extremes of one’s shoes were directly indicative of rank and prowess within a community. Kings and princes would wear shoes with toes up to 30 inches long! The women’s’ obsession with shoes doesn’t begin in any modern form until the mid 18th century with Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette who start trends in their courts regarding footwear. Madame de Pompadour made popular shoes that were named after her “Pompadour”. Unfortunately these shoes were very high and very narrow and too many ladies fainted at court because they tried to reduce the apparent size of their feet. Marie Antoinette went to her death in two inch heels less than 50 years later.
“A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself ”~ Maya Angelou
When I first read Maya Angelou’s quote above, my body and soul let out a deep sigh…
I was in my early twenties and I was seeking to just be my most brilliant self, a spark of the Divine as expressed in my female body. I wanted to use my talents to serve others and was unsure where to begin. This quote didn’t tell me how, but it sure exemplified how it might be to show up and shine, “ahhh to be in harmony with my spirit.”
At 19, I wrote a letter to the Universe and asked that I be a channel for inspiration, creativity, love and healing. I soon discovered…
Once you raise your hand in God’s classroom, You’re IN!
Volunteering or rather acknowledging my calling threw me into what I call “the trenches.” Learning about being spiritual by facing fears and growing into adulthood with a purpose I actually had no idea how to attain. My intense training began.
I moved to Manhattan from Queens, by day I worked in film and by night; I read, did research practiced various healing and mystical arts. I also started giving intuitive readings at corporate events and private parties.
I never wanted to say that I haven’t tried what my heart pulled me to…so I explored acting, directing, writing, belly dancing. I learned that everything I have ever done has served me in this path and that no experience or relationship was a waste of time. Each and every experience and training influences my practice and my work today!
I wanted to be myself, accept myself and just flow with the tides without controlling or worrying about where I was going and how was I going to get there. I wanted to release the fears of being “too much” or conversely, “not enough.”
This search for healing, understanding and awareness has led me to ask profound questions and living into the answers. While our inquisitive minds can analyze and explain into early morning hours with kindred spirits there is a huge part of existence that is unexplainable…the Mystery.
The Mystery is all encompassing and sustains us. We must deal with it with utter faith, deep trust, compassionate love and unconditional surrender.
Surrender to me means that as a soul having human experiences we strive to do the best we can. Aware that we are in a learning process and that “it’s okay to learn as I go.” We also do all we can and then LET GO.
Yes, we must pour our love into our work,
fill our relationships with sacred presence and then release…
We do not know all outcomes even if highly intuitive.
We are taken to the path and we are supported.
In the end, as much of a go-getting, organized type A you can be…there is much you cannot control. If we can acknowledge that there is a greater plan at work. A master plan, if you will…our lives start to flow more and we start to experience greater harmony.
In my intuitive session work that’s my strongest skill. I don’t google my clients or want to hear their questions until I get an initial reading and share with them what I am picking up.
Imagine every time you had to show up to a large part of your work…that you had no spreadsheets, research, outlines, background on your case and you were not armed with the fool-proof coaching questions that let you see clearly into a client?
No, I just say hello, a prayer and start sharing what I see, hear, feel and know.
That’s how surrender has evolved in my life.
I can’t be afraid of the outcome, or that it may not show up.
I’m there as the vessel and Spirit has my back. Period.
That ability that I have in the intuitive part of my work is one that I am cultivating in other areas of my life. Scary and its been worth it! The more I surrender, the calmer and more open and peaceful I feel even if the outcome is not what I wanted.
Understanding that everything happens for a reason and there may be something better for me along the way helps me deal with disappointments that happen in everyday life.
It is part of our growth and education to learn to deal with our own unique trials and very real physical challenges. It is up to us to keep connecting to our inner life when the outer world is pushing its way in. It’s up to us to be open to finding our people, our friends, allies and sacred community.
As Caroline Myss, medical intuitive and NY Times best-seller author has said, “For the first time in history, we are mystics without monasteries.”
It is very clear to me that these days we are being called into a deeper experience of God in many ways. The definition of a mystic is—someone who wants to engage in direct conversation with God.
The Urban Priestess reworks the outmoded image of a mystic.
An urban priestess is a mystic in high heels, mani-pedi’s and clothes that represent her on many levels. Of course, only if she wants to rock the heels if not flip flops have become typical of the modern day wise woman, urban shaman and urban priestess.
That’s what my life has been as an urban priestess…I maintain a conversation with God as I live, survive and thrive in this modern world full of both high tech and basic demands.
Without a temple, convent or monastery…I’ve learned to have spiritual practices that support my mind, body and spirit through the most trying of times. I’ve learned to give gratitude thru art, singing, dancing and giving to others. I’ve learned to pour my love and Soul into everything I do.
I realized that I had intense intuition as a child and teen and cultivated it secretly for a long time. Then I felt a calling to gather women and have done that since 1999. Men started joining us in 2010.
When Spirit says, “Gather them. Speak. Heal. Tell them…” I do it to the best of my ability. It can be challenging to fight the internal pull I always have to run into a temple and wait for people to knock when they need my services.
As a modern day priestess I serve wherever I am and I have to communicate the work in order to serve well. I know I must share my experiences and reach out to those that may be going through similar situations or experiences. I know I have to share my deep inner world in order to gain entrance into yours…smile.
The original function of shoes is to protect the feet, and the decorative function is just a derivative function, but today people are following a cart-before-horse thinking that the decorative function of shoes is the most important.
Shoes become more and more beautiful, but they are not necessarily comfortable, and in some cases they might even hurt foot or other body parts. It’s really cruel torture when wearing uncomfortable shoes. Then what health effects of these styles of shoes and what kind of shoes can be both beautiful and healthy?
High heels will let you have a figure of perfect elegance, but it is real torture from the toe to the spine. It’s obvious that because of the raising heels, weight borne by whole foot is centralized at the forefoot which is unfit for loading, adding burden to the forefoot, making you feel more painful when standing and walking.
High heels can affect the foot bone health. When wearing high heels, ankle joint becomes loose and not stable which will increase the possibility to get sprained and cause ligamentous injury, tendon rupture or even fracture. If the heel is too high, metatarsophalangeal joints in the excessive stretched state will lead to subluxation of the metatarsophalangeal joint, and even fatigue fracture (stress fracture).
High heel is one of the factors contributing to osteoarthritis of the knee. Ankle is unable to play the normal function because of high heels, knee joint must be under greater pressure in order to maintain stability of the body when walking; tension and pressure for a long time can cause inflammation of the knee. Studies have shown that wearing high heels for walking knee pressure will increase 23% on average. Wearing high heels when climbing stairs, pressure for knee increases 3 times than usual times; Going down the stairs will even increase 7~9 times of pressure than usual. Consequently, when wearing high heels, you’d better climb the stairs as fewer times as possible.
Is the thick heel safer than thin heels? Actually there’s no big difference between both knee injuries. While thick high heel causes knee wear increasing 22%, fine high heel increases 26%. However, thin heels certainly increase the possibility to sprain ankle due to instability. When wearing high heels, human center of gravity moves forward, and to get balance human body will take initiative back. Physiological curvature of the spine gets worse; vertebra contact area reduces and pressure increases, the load on the spine becomes bigger. Back and hip muscles in contraction for a long time is easy to raise lumbago and back pain.
Remember the principle that to wear the right shoes on right occasions. In daily life, we recommend that you choose loose, suitable shoes in accordance with arches physiological principle with adequate height for heels. It is more suitable for you to wear sport shoes for a long time walking when traveling, and they would also be useful to correct foot problems. If you want to wear high heels, it is necessary to carefully select shoes. Suitable shape of shoe and heel height makes the foot not so easily tired; shoes with built-in auxiliary tools of certain hardness such as built-in heel cup and arch support pads will effectively reduce pressure to be healthier. At the same time it enhances the wearing comfort of shoes. When you wear high heels you can also use the forefeet mats to reduce foot injuries. Only protecting our own feet can we keep beautiful appearance longer.

Shoes are indeed the most integral part of wardrobe. Finding the shoe which is stylish yet comfortable and sync with your rest of the wardrobe could be travail. However, things get more convoluted when shoe hunt is for women. Women happen to be more fashion conscious and trend follower. In their pursuit of finding the well designed and trendy footwear; they, sometimes, opt for something that can harm their health. Yes- it is an out rightly wrong perception that footwear has got nothing to do with health. In order to fathom this entire phenomenon that links footwear with health; we need to understand the “heel conundrum”.
Yes-I am using the word conundrum. Heels have always been topic of discussion among the different segments of society. Gender experts have always been quite vocal about heels and there have been several potent arguments in the advocacy and adversary on the size of heels. Some feminists argue that heels are used just to enhance the woman’s sex appeal and water down her image to a “sex object”. Some have gone to an extent that long heels are used just to make women stagger slowly and portray her as delicate and vulnerable creature who completely depends on men. In this article I will shed some light on how heels can affect you feet and how to make them least harmful.
How long heels can harm you?
When you wear high heels longer than usual, you are putting your feet in an abnormal position. More the feet remains in this position, more it can cause the Achilles tendon to shorten. When the foot is bent towards front side, ball of the foot and toe will have to carry the weight. It increases the chance of damage to underlying soft tissue. I have met and heard about people who, in their penchant of adopting new styles, have undergone complicated foot and toe related surgeries.
However, the more complicated and long lasting problem oversize heels can cause is spine problem. When women wear big heals, they automatically push their centre of gravity towards forward. It makes their spine carry the most of their body weight to make them stand straight. When a survey was conducted, many women facing spine problem turned out to be the victim of oversize heels.
How to make heels least affected?
It is simply not possible for women to abandon the heels. Some wear them to look tall, some likes them and some just want to satiate their appetite for fashion. Best way to make heels least affected is minimizing their use.
1) If you are wearing heels in office, put them off while you are sitting and wear them again when you have to move.
2) If you know you have to wear shoe with high heels on weekend, reduce their use in the weekdays.
3) Buy comfy slippers for home and comfortable sneakers to run errands to compensate the damage cause by heels.
4) Get a nice pair of wedges shoes. Their thick and wide heel is bit comfortable; furthermore, the can be used for formal and casual occasion both.
Young girls are more exposed to the injuries cause by big heels because of their predilection towards new vogues. In their Endeavour to stand out from the herd, they do not feel hesitate to go over the board even on the expense of their health. Balance is the key. Wear heels if it’s inevitable, but wear the intermittently.
